Cheap Valentine’s Day Date Ideas – For Couples
February 11, 2009What do you have planned for Valentine’s Day this year? Are you excited about a romantic night out, or is the idea of blowing money away on even your “Number One” making you chew your fingernails in anxious anticipation? Well don’t feel bad. This year, in the midst of a recession, you’re not alone.
If you’re among the 11 million Americans who are out of work right now, do yourself a favor and turn off your TV! Ignore the Valentine’s themed ads for diamonds and cars and ridiculous luxury items that are simply not the wisest items to “invest in” right now.
We’re not saying to NOT have fun this year for Valentine’s Day. What we are suggesting is something that’s been true since this Hallmark Holiday was created—that basically, when it comes to spending a memorable night with your sweetie, you really don’t have to spend as much as you think.
Here are a few great ways to bring a little romance your way on Valentine’s Day, without breaking the bank.
Dinner and a Movie
Okay, so maybe you do this every Friday night. But, if you add a little extra twist to the night, the romance will pop even more. Try a light Italian dinner for 2 by candlelight. A great entrée idea, which is as delicious as it is affordable, is a cheese tortellini dish in marinara sauce. You can buy ready-made tortellini at your regular grocery store, pick up a can of your favorite marinara and some garlic bread (and a bottle of wine if you’re a wine lover), and you’ll have a great meal for under $30.
Afterwards, it’s up to you two if you want to go out for a movie or stay in. By cooking at home, you’ve saved a good $30 over dining out.
Another option is to make dessert the highlight of the night. If you or your Valentine gets out of work late, you can meet for a movie and then go to a cute romantic café or a slice of tiramasu and a cappuccino.
Split the Tab with a Double Date
Another great way to save is to go on a double date and split appetizers and entrees and a bottle of wine with your friends. This, of course, could be tricky if your budget and your dining companions are worlds apart. But, if you go with a couple that is also watching their funds, you might be able to have a fun night out with friends and not experience the anxiety that usually accompanies those expensive dinners with your more frivolous friends.
You might be able to find a place with a BYOB policy, so you can save a lot by swinging by your local liquor store and picking up your own bottle of wine.
