How To Be Productive Working From Home

One of the best ways to help beat the recession is to earn some extra money by working at home. Whether you have a full time position and want to work extra, or if you're currently stay home with the kids, working from home is perhaps the most straightforward way to put extra cash in your pocket.

Many of us, however, feel that working at home may not be productive as we are too close to the TV and potentially fattening as we are too close to the refrigerator. So here are some ideas to help make working at home more productive:

1. Have a plan and goals for what you want to accomplish each week

2. Create a schedule and then stick with it. Treat your days like a "regular" work day. Many people have found that a 9-5 or 10-6 schedule really helps keep them on track and productive.

3. Start out with something easy, fun or interesting. This helps you build momentum throughout the day.

4. Separate your "work" area from your "living" area. This includes your phone and computer. Keep the "entertainment" items like games components away from your computer (unless you job is to create video games, of course).

5. Don’t take personal calls unless they are urgent. If possible have separate phone lines. And politely but firmly, tell your friends NOT to call you during the day.

6. Get dressed properly everyday. Don’t wear pajamas all day. It’ll make you feel less work-like.

7. Take breaks regularly. Get away from the computer and don’t work through lunch. I’ve noticed this can be hard already. But don’t over extend your break and go shopping. It will ruin your day.

8. Limit distractions. Keep your desk clean and your work area free.

9. Your body needs light and energy – so get out and take a walk, especially before the day starts. Sometimes it can be 7pm and you haven’t gone outside at all. Arrange lunch meetings, so you don’t feel removed – but don’t let the, get overextended.

10. Work on networking. Since you probably don’t have coworkers, it’s good to get to know people who are doing the same things as you so you can socialize a bit, etc.

11. Remember and keep your weekends. Working from home shouldn’t change the balance in your life. If needed, put a pillow case over the computer so you don’t have to look at it.

12. Request feedback from people you work with so you can constantly improve your skills. For those who would like to work at home, next week we will discuss how to determine what type of work is good for you. Remember, the more productive you are, the happier your situation will be.
